Best sites for quality, free icons

When you design for mobile apps, mobile web and increasing for desktop web sites you are constantly looking for good, clear and clean icons. This is not as easy as it sounds as I have seen hundreds of icon collections which vary wildly in quality and price. Here are the three best sites I have found and sue all the time for icons in my designs.

IconMonstr

IconMonstr remains my favorite site for icons.  It is updated regularly with a huge collection of over 800 icons usually with multiple options for every subject. The site is easy to search and icons are available in PNG and SVG formats. You can explore IconMnstr here.

The Noun Project

The noun project is another site that has great selection of quality icons but in this case they are a mix of free and for sale icons.  Free icons are split between public domain icons and  icons that you must attribute to the creator to use. It is nice to be able toto browse icons by collection so you don’t have to hunt to find sets of icons that all work together.  You can explore The Noun Project here.

Iconic

Iconic is an open source icon set consisting of 171 marks in raster, vector and font formats. I like this site because they are really trying to be the most forward-thinking icon set around based on its support of forward facing display/deployment methods. So being able to get icons in something like a font format is a huge help for mobile development since you don’t have to turn all your icons into graphics and they will scale seamlessly between devices and resolutions. You can explore Iconic here.
