Here are the things that I think are worth reading and checking out this week:

Design Prototyping
with Origami Studio

Facebook has a new tool for designers, and it’s meant to make prototyping apps much faster and easier than your current workflow. Origami Studio is native for OS X, and uses current technology like Core Animation for stability and speed. Facebook also built Origami Studio to feel like Sketch or Photoshop in use.

Did Xiaomi Just Beat Apple At Its Own Game?

Smartphones are , but Xiaomi’s Mi MIX—supposedly designed in conjunction with Philippe Starck—may be the first physical specimen that’s more impressively put together than anything made by Apple. The phone features rounded glass like the iPhones of today, but the screen has no bezel, with the glass reaching edge-to-edge. The cameras don’t stick out of the back of the phone. Xiaomi and Starck have moved the receiver and proximity sensor, which take up the top edge of the regular iPhone, to new locations behind the screen. Proximity is tracked by ultrasonics, and the receiver is built into a piezoelectric driver—which if I’m understanding correctly, sends electrical impulses through the phone to vibrate. But maybe most impressively, the entire phone is made of ceramic—a material that, just like glass, is prone to shatter, but has numerous potential advantages over the iPhone’s aluminum frame, like improved heat dissipation and scratch resistance. In fact, speculation points to Apple’s interest in incorporating ceramic into future iPhones, as it currently does special editions of the Apple Watch. (Though some argue ceramic is a logistical nightmare off the assembly line that even Apple can’t handle just yet.)

The Surface Dial is a crazy puck that controls Microsoft’s new PC

Microsoft just announced an all-in-one PC called Surface Studio and alongside it a strange new accessory called the Surface Dial. The Surface Dial is big puck that’s sort of like a modern twist on a paint palette. When the Dial is placed on the Studio’s screen, a radial menu pops up all around it. Different color or brush options might pop up, for example, when a painting app is on screen — presumably, other apps can create custom menus as well. It can also be used to navigate and pan around an image.

Copywriting in UI. Words that Make Design Go Round

In Tubik Blog we have discussed a lot of diverse aspects of design, including UX wireframing, layout, color pallete, typography, appropriate animation and UI visuals etc. However, there is one more vital element which was not discussed in detail, being, however, a great tool of success. The tool which is as ancient as humanity is. The words. Words are well known as the universal mechanism of incredible functionality. In terms of user interface of any kind, being supported with all the other visual features mentioned before in our blog, text becomes one of the key features to high performance.

5 Forecasts For The Future

Every now and then, it’s a fun and healthy challenge to think distantly. Sure, we already expect self-driving cars, wearable hardware, a connected home, and augmented reality. But where does the foreseeable future take us next? I’m talking more Black Mirror than investor thesis. What new problems will we be struggling with? What will kill us? What will connect us? While solutions change, some questions will always remain. If only to stimulate discussion among friends, here are a few ideas on my mind these days.
