For the last two years, Scott Dadich and his producing partners, Morgan Neville and Dave O’Connor, have ventured into the world of design to figure out how designers work. The result of that exploration is a really good new Netflix series called Abstract: The Art of Design. It’s an 8 part documentary series that explores the artistic minds and creative processes of the world’s top designers in fashion, art, cars and more. It includes prominent figures with jobs you expect to see highlighted in a series about design, like architect Bjarke Ingels, photographer Platon, shoe designer Tinker Hatfield, graphic designer Paula Scher and more.
I always think it’s moderately interesting to hear designers talk about their past work but I really love when I get to see their process and understand how they think. The series does a really nice job of balancing those two things so you can see how something like Nike’s Back to the Future self-lacing shoes was created in reality but then also see where Tinker Hatfield gets his inspiration and how his creative process work. If you are any type of creative I think its well worth your time to check out this series and I hope they keep it going the way they have with Chef’s Table. You can watch Abstract on Netflix here.
